Threadbare is a “visual” “”novel”” about a martyr exacting revenge on the prophet who foretold her death. Make him pay! Fail upward! Change nothing! Fulfill your awful, awful destiny!

Threadbare features:

  • The indomitable power of spite, through which all things can be accomplished!
  • One-sided(?) tension(??) with the guy you’re doomed to kill!
  • The machinations of a deeply stupid meritocracy, which asks “what if we put wealthy art patrons in charge of a communications & intelligence agency?”
  • Running errands against your will!
  • High effort low art! Low effort high art? Low effort low art. It still took me nine months. And it’s not even done!
  • What I can only describe as a slideshow with quicktime events scored by industrial noise metal!
  • This guy, I guess !!

This is like… a pre-alpha demo. It covers maybe a third of the story, and it’s missing basic things like alt text and alternate game modes, which will be part of the full thing. Mostly this is an excuse to get other people to break it so I know what to fix.

Content Warnings

Depictions of blood, gore, injury, violence, death, subjugation of a fictional class of people, mind control (e.g. transfiguring someone with cybernetics in order to control them), and misgendering / dehumanizing language (i.e. referring to a sentient character as if they are an inanimate object; gendered insults; run-of-the-mill misgendering.)

This a dose of typical grimdark, but dorky. Grimdork. I like to think we suffer lightly here, laughing at the expense of the Powers That Be, but your mileage may vary.

Safety + Accessibility

There are UI animations typical of visual novels, including typing, shaking, fade-to-black, and crossfade animations. I have avoided outright flashing, but due to the nature of this Twine’s janky passage transitions, I would proceed with caution if you are sensitive to that.

There is sound in the form of ambient music and sound effects.

This Twine is keyboard-navigable, but is not yet image described. Some quirks prevent it from being screenreader-friendly, too. This is a consequence of wrestling Twine into being a visual novel, unfortunately. In the future, I will compile a static, soundless version to address the above issues.

This thing is media heavy. You should be able to play it in your browser, but if things aren’t loading correctly, try downloading it instead.

I was going to ask, “How the ever-loving hell did you make this in Twine?” but then I made it to the end and found that you had consulted the wise Twine wizards such as GreyElf. Even still, I can’t believe I was able to fully play this on my iPad (even the tapping section, though I did have to refresh + retry once) complete with the sounds and music.

I went in completely blind, and I was immediately shocked by the striking visual style, the nice dialogue blips, and most of all the MUSIC!!! I didn’t realize there was such insanely good CC0 or 3.0/4.0 music out there. I’m always happy to see other creators who consider music a vital part of their process!

I laughed at every exeunt, seeing Frey slowly disappear from their portrait was AMAZING. You nailed the dingy, horrific industrial-ness of the setting but also the humor in the characters’ dialogues!

Here are some of the screenshots I took:

THESE were my favorite sections:

“Respectfully, Lord Petrei, I wasn’t asking you.”

GET FUCKING OWNED

I was so in the mood for a story about revenge, fueled by the emotions of the dystopian nightmare you talked about in the Extras, and this turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.

Normally when I write a review for a new game, there’s a couple typos/errors that I notice, but I didn’t see anything that stood out to me during my playthrough! The only “inconsistency” was that I didn’t tell ES my name, but then they called me Frey later on. It’s possible I just missed the line where they find that out, maybe during the boss battle. I was preoccupied with on button-pressing. LOL

Insanely well made and super interesting lore!! Thank you for uploading such a masterpiece for free; I felt extremely lucky to play it!
